Using a prerecorded track integrated through a logistically elegant and remarkably simple system, the work transforms a traditional ensemble into something vast, immersive, and otherworldly. The band becomes The Universe Below.

Commissioned by the Bay Shore Schools Arts Education Fund for Bay Shore High School, this composition was inspired by the visionary explorations of the sea found in William J. Broad’s book, The Universe Below. From that spark, the STORMSystem expands into new sonic territory, merging live musicians with the haunting calls of whales and the luminous resonance of 17 prerecorded harps rising like light through water.

The result is an unexpected descent into the submerged, an adventure where the boundary between acoustic performance and oceanic vastness dissolves. Sound becomes depth. Harmony becomes current. The ensemble becomes environment.

Delivered with score and audio (CD or mp3 for ease of use), the work offers directors an innovative yet accessible way to create a breathtaking sonic landscape.
